How to Be More Stylish: 8 Simple Tips to Elevate Your Outfits

Personal style matters because the way you get dressed can have a real impact on the way you show up in your life. When you put on something that makes you feel polished, confident, interesting, or simply more like yourself, you tend to carry yourself differently.

It is one of those small everyday choices that can help you feel more connected to the person you want to be.

And becoming more stylish does not require an entirely new wardrobe, following every trend if it does not feel like you, or trying to match anyone else’s style.

Some of the biggest differences between an outfit that feels basic and one that makes you feel really put together come down to a handful of small styling decisions.

It might be the jacket you add over a simple top, the shoes you choose instead of automatically reaching for the same pair, or the belt and earrings that make the whole outfit feel more intentional.

Personal style takes time to develop, but you can start experimenting right now. These are eight simple things I’m trying myself as I work on becoming more stylish, too.

How to be more stylish:

1. Add a Third Layer

One of the easiest ways to make an outfit feel more styled is to add a third piece. Instead of simply wearing jeans and a T-shirt, add a blazer. Throw an oversized button-down over a tank and trousers, or add a cardigan, vest, jacket, trench coat, or sweater over your shoulders.

That extra layer gives the outfit more dimension and often makes it look much more intentional.

You do not need to force this every single day, of course. Sometimes a beautiful dress or a great top is enough on its own. But if you put on an outfit and feel like something is missing, try adding another layer before changing everything else.

2. Be Intentional with Your Footwear

Shoes can completely change the way an outfit looks, which is why I believe footwear deserves a little more thought than simply reaching for whatever happens to be closest to the door.

That does not mean you need uncomfortable heels or expensive designer shoes. Your footwear should still work for your actual life.

But think about whether the shoes you are wearing genuinely complete the outfit. Maybe your everyday jeans look more polished with loafers or ballet flats. Maybe a great boot gives a simple outfit more personality. Even sneakers come in completely different styles and silhouettes, so the right pair can make a big difference.

The goal is simple: wear shoes you love, but also choose them as part of the outfit rather than as an afterthought.

3. Add Accessories

Accessories are one of the fastest ways to make simple clothes feel more interesting. A pair of earrings, a necklace, watch, belt, sunglasses, scarf, or great bag can take a very basic outfit and make it feel much more finished.

You definitely do not need to wear everything at once. Sometimes all a white T-shirt and jeans need is a beautiful belt, a pair of earrings, and the right shoes.

Accessories are also a great way to develop a more recognizable personal style because you start noticing what you naturally gravitate toward.

Maybe you always wear oversized sunglasses, love simple gold jewellery, or find yourself reaching for the same structured bag. Those little details can eventually become part of your signature style.

4. Style Your Clothes Instead of Simply Wearing Them

This is such a small distinction, but it can make a huge difference. Two people can wear the exact same shirt and jeans and somehow end up with completely different outfits because of how they styled them.

Try tucking in your shirt, pushing up your blazer sleeves, cuffing your jeans, leaving your button-down slightly open over a tank, or adding a belt to a dress.

You can also play around with layering or draping a sweater over your shoulders. Often, you do not need another item of clothing at all. You simply need to experiment with the clothes you already own and find a way of wearing them that feels more interesting.

5. Pay Attention to Proportions

If an outfit looks slightly off and you cannot figure out why, take a look at the proportions. Sometimes the individual pieces are perfectly good, but they are not working particularly well together.

An oversized pair of trousers might look better with a more fitted or tucked-in top. A longer cardigan might work better with a slimmer pant. A cropped jacket might suddenly make sense when paired with high-waisted jeans because the proportions feel more balanced.

There are no absolute rules here, and personal preference always matters, but becoming more aware of proportions can completely change the way you get dressed.

Before deciding that a piece does not suit you, experiment with what you are pairing it with. Sometimes the piece is not the problem. The combination is.

6. Buy One Trendy Piece Each Season

You do not need to rebuild your wardrobe every time trends change. In fact, I think one of the easiest ways to keep your style feeling current is to choose one trend each season that you genuinely love and introduce it into the wardrobe you already have.

Maybe it is a particular jacket, a new shoe style, a bag, a colour, or a different jean silhouette. The point is not to chase every trend that appears on your feed. It is to choose one thing that feels fun and relevant to you, then mix it with pieces you already wear regularly.

A single current piece can make your existing basics feel completely fresh again, without turning your wardrobe into a revolving door of clothes you will stop wearing six months later.

7. Create a Few Outfit Formulas

One of the biggest misconceptions about being stylish is that you need to constantly come up with completely new outfits. In reality, having a handful of combinations you know work can make getting dressed much easier.

Maybe your formula is straight-leg jeans, a fitted T-shirt, a blazer, and loafers. Maybe it is wide-leg trousers, a fitted tank, an oversized shirt, and sandals. Or perhaps you love leggings, a great sweatshirt, a trench coat, and sneakers.

Once you know the combinations that consistently make you feel good, you can repeat them and simply change the individual pieces. Swap the blazer, shoes, colours, or accessories while keeping the general formula the same.

Repeating an outfit formula is not boring. It is about knowing what works for you.

8. Don't Be Afraid to Be a Little Over the Top

Sometimes the thing that makes an outfit stylish is the part that feels like a little much. The statement earrings. The oversized sunglasses. The dramatic coat. The unexpected shoes. The bold bag. The outfit that feels slightly more dressed up than the occasion technically requires.

If you love it, wear it. Personal style gets a lot more interesting when you stop trying to make every outfit perfectly safe and start giving yourself permission to have a little fun with it.

Becoming More Stylish Doesn't Require More Clothes

The biggest takeaway is that becoming more stylish does not necessarily require buying more. You can own an incredible wardrobe and still feel like you have nothing to wear if you have not figured out how you actually like to put clothes together.

Style develops through experimenting with what you already have. Add the extra layer, change the shoes, put on the belt, tuck the shirt, save outfit inspiration, and pay attention to the combinations that make you feel especially good.

Over time, you start developing your own little rules, signatures, and outfit formulas. You do not need to wake up tomorrow with a completely new personal style. Start with one small edit to the outfit you are already wearing.
