There is still so much time to change how your life feels before the year is over. Your routines can change. Your standards can change. Your environment can change. The way you spend your time, take care of yourself, make decisions and think about your future can all start to look different.
You don’t need to overhaul your entire life to make that happen. If I wanted to finish the year feeling more aligned, intentional and excited about the life I’m creating, these are the seven simple life edits I’d get obsessed with.
(And if you love this list, you'll be obsessed with the 40-Day Life Edit Challenge)
7 Simple Life Edits to Change Your Life:
1. Start Your Day on Purpose
Give yourself a little time before the world starts asking things of you. Your morning doesn’t need to involve a complicated routine or a long list of habits. The goal is simply to start the day feeling like you are choosing how you want to show up instead of immediately reacting to everything around you.
A few simple ways to do that:
Get dressed, dress well
Make your bed
Write down your priorities
Decide what actually matters that day
A calm, intentional morning can change the way you move through the rest of your day.
(Some of this can be done the night before, too, which is especially important if you have kids and they wake up at the same time you do, no matter how early you wake up!)
2. Move Like Someone Who Cares for Herself
You don’t need an extreme fitness routine or a complete transformation plan. You just need to make regular movement part of the way you take care of yourself.
That might look like:
Going for a walk
Stretching
Lifting weights
Getting outside
Choosing movement that makes you feel stronger and more energized
Think beyond what movement can do for you today. Choose habits that support your energy, confidence and the person you want to be six months, one year and ten years from now.
3. Declutter Something Every Day
Your environment has a huge influence on how your life feels. The things around you can either support the life you’re trying to create or constantly remind you of things you’ve outgrown, avoided or stopped caring about.
You don’t have to declutter your entire house in a weekend. Start small:
Clear one drawer
Donate clothes that no longer fit your life or style
Finish one lingering task
Delete apps or files you no longer need
Clear the pile that has been bothering you for months
Little by little, start letting go of what belongs to an older version of your life and make more room for the one you’re creating now.
4. Raise Your Standards
Your life starts changing when you become more intentional about what you accept, expect and follow through on. Raising your standards doesn’t have to mean making dramatic changes overnight. Often, it starts with the small ways you decide to take yourself and your life more seriously.
You could:
Keep one promise to yourself
Set one overdue boundary
Take better care of something you own
Stop accepting something you know isn’t working
Follow through on something you’ve been putting off
Standards are built through small decisions. Over time, those decisions shape the way you live, the way you see yourself and what you believe is possible for your next chapter. Your standards also determine how people treat you, so choose accordingly.
5. Spend Time With Your Future Self
Get really clear on the person you’re becoming. It’s much easier to make decisions that support your future when you actually have a picture of what that future looks and feels like.
Ask yourself:
How does she spend her mornings?
What does she make time for?
What does she prioritize?
What does she no longer tolerate?
How does she make decisions?
What does her everyday life actually look like?
The more familiar that version of you becomes, the easier it is to start making decisions like her now. You don’t have to wait until you reach the goal to begin becoming the person capable of creating it.
6. Put Your Life on the Calendar
If you want your life to feel more interesting, connected or exciting, start intentionally making room for those things. So much of the life we say we want stays in the category of “someday” simply because we never decide when it is actually going to happen.
Put the things that matter on your calendar:
Schedule the workout
Book the dinner
Plan the day trip
Make time for the hobby
Invite someone over
Buy the concert tickets
Block off the afternoon you keep saying you need
A life you love is created through the things you intentionally make space for, not just the things you hope you’ll eventually get around to doing.
7. Make One Edit
You do not need to fix your entire life today. When everything feels like it needs to change, trying to tackle it all at once can make it harder to start at all.
Instead, ask yourself:
What feels outgrown?
What isn’t working anymore?
What would make my life feel better?
What is one change I can make right now?
Make that edit, then keep going from there. Your next chapter is built through the decisions you make about what stays, what goes, what matters and who you’re becoming.
One life edit might seem small on its own, but those edits add up. Imagine how different your life could feel by the end of the year if you started making them today. And be sure to get on the waitlist for the 40-Day Life Edit Challenge.
